Supermum to the Rescue!

Every Mum I know is a real-life superhero. Dealing with kids is no easy feat. I know I have some super powers *shhh, don't let my husband know* to make my day as safe as possible.

Agility: Being nimble comes in handy for dodging the Duplo Maze!

Anti- Gravity: Here in Christchurch, safety is paramount when it comes to securing heavy furniture so it does not topple over. Forget climbing toddlers, an earthquake could turn nasty if you bookshelves and cabinets are not secured. Falling objects are hard for even a superhero to dodge!

Armour: Protective cases for heads, knees and feet are a must when doing activities such as bike riding, skateboarding or playing sports. Luckily, I have everything on hand to protect my boys.

Camouflage: Keeping items hidden that are dangerous in the hands of child. Think hot drinks, power sockets, pain relief and sharp objects. Baby gates are a great blanket camouflage options, as well as socket plugs and cabinet locks. Hot drinks need to be kept up high, and it is always a good idea to let kids have a kitchen drawer of their own so that they can still feel like they are helping in the kitchen without being able to get their hands on some of the more dangerous utensils.

Endurance: is the capability of sustaining prolonged stressful effort, usually associated with coffee consumption in mothers. *please see camouflage for how to keep superpower-coffee out of children's reach.*

Supersonic senses: The power of having heightened listening and vision skills thanks to a baby monitor, like this one at Dropcam. Now I know when my boys are up to mischief when they should be sleeping!

Healing: The power to heal rapidly is one that my boys really appreciate when they hurt themselves. I can't prevent some of the scrapes and bruises they get, but I can help them to feel better as soon as possible. My healing accessories are kept out of their reach, but always on hand in case of a scraped knee, fever or cough.

Possession: confiscating dangerous items such as balloons and small toys. I know first hand how scary a chocking baby or toddler can be. Please don't underestimate what a baby can cram into their mouth. Balloons may look innocent, but when they pop, the small pieces are very dangerous if inhaled. Luckily, in our case the balloon passed through, but things could have been a lot worse. *I will spare you the photos of balloon poop!*

Stealth: trying to check on a sleeping child without waking them up. Luckily, Dropcam have come up with the perfect solution so that you can see and hear your baby without the dreaded door squeak or noise activated toy ruining your 8pm plans.

I would love to know what superpowers you have- share your best tips in the comments below!

  1. My best one is the ability to eliminate pain from injuries with just a kiss. (Or two for more serious bumps). I've even had it work on a broken bone.

  2. I think you should add organization to your super power. Your pantry is incredible.

    1. Thank you! I do quite like my pantry. Wish the rest of my house was this organised though!
