A portrait of my children, once a week, in 2014.

Lucas did the 4k Summer Starter walk today with my Dad, and arrived at the finish line with Hulk face paint. I was so proud of him!

Batman Birthday Invitations

My son's 5th birthday is coming up, and he requested a superhero party with an emphasis on Batman. I knew I wanted to keep with a black and yellow theme, and set the tone with the birthday invitations.

I cut some bat cards on the Cricut- these are a Halloween based item but worked well for the Batman theme! These were cut using the Artiste Cartridge with Black cardstock at 5.25 real dial size.

I then created an insert on Honey cardstock and printed the wording using the Batman Forever font. As a finishing touch, I stamped a row of bats on the bottom of the cardstock using Black ink and my Halloween Greetings stamp set. I have blurred out address and phone number for privacy reasons.

The card folds up as a bat- excuse fingers!

And then opens to reveal the party invitation.

Lucas was so excited to see the finished invitations, and I am really pleased with the end result. I can't wait to share some more Batman themed creations closer to the time!

A Bridesmaid Dress Dilemma fixed!

I remember getting married nearly seven years ago, and being on the hunt for the perfect green dress. I had a vision in my head and the colour was so hard to find. Eventually, my Mum made up some dresses in the colour I wanted, as nothing was available ready-made.

I wish I had known about the Weddington Way website, they had the perfect colour in the style I wanted. Here is how I would have styled my bridesmaid dress from Weddington Way for my garden wedding. Pearl jewelry, a romantic updo and some pink lips for the bridesmaids are a classic look.
Weddington Way Bridesmaid Set

One of the things about buying a bridesmaid dress is wondering how to wear it after the big day. Below, I have come up with some ideas on how to get more mileage out of your bridesmaid dress.

Look one is perfect  for a business event or attending a wedding as a guest. After big day, you can add a fun jacket and some barely there makeup to be glammed up. I have paired the dress with black and white, and the jacket adds a touch of interest whilst keeping with the theme. The braided headband is perfect to style your hair easily- create flowing locks or a complete up-do with this in your hair.

Look two is a weekend look, perfect for a lunch out with friends or a Christmas event. I love these shoes, they are pretty and comfortable, and match in with the green and pink floral theme. I always need a big tote bag for the weekend, so this tassel natural bag is a great option that will not detract from your outfit.
Weddington Way Weekend

Here is a summery Christmas look I have put together, as I live in New Zealand where we celebrate the holidays over summer. A sleeveless dress is perfect for Christmas day, and adding red accessories gives a Christmas feel without being too over the top due to the slightly non-traditional shades used. This bracelet stops it from being too matchy and adds some detail to the look. The shoes will take you from a BBQ to the beach, and the lip gloss complements the outfit but goes on quite sheer so will not be too dark for any daytime celebrations. Apply a double coat to then add a pop of colour for any night time events,

The last look is Christmas inspired if you live in the Northern Hemisphere- snow and rain will cause you to wrap up warm so some tights, boots and neutral colours will help you look stylish and festive throughout the day. A nude lip and bold nail will help to draw attention to the details in the bracelet and shoes, and the tights are a perfect for providing an extra layer.Weddington Way Christmas Northern Hemisphere

I hope you have been inspired by these looks- I would love to know which one you like the best! Be sure to check out Weddington Way if you are after a bridesmaid dress or a dress for Christmas functions or any other special events you have coming up, as their dresses are extremely versatile and reasonable.

To The Kitchen!

Welcome back to another installment of the Poppins Book Nook!

This month's theme is To The Kitchen!

My boys both love baking and helping in the kitchen, so we focused on a couple of great kid's cooking books this month. The two that we loved were Chop Chop- The Kid's Guide to Cooking Real Food with Your Family and Ready, Steady Spaghetti. We chose both these books as they had great step-by-step photo instructions, were visually appealing and also both had comprehensive safety, healthy eating and recipe sections.

As well as being in the kitchen to cook, we also focused on science experiments this month using things you will find in the kitchen.

The first thing we did was create a water symphony. I filled three glasses with different amounts of water and the boys had fun hitting the glass with a wooden spoon and making different sounds.

A fun dessert was a Spider- we added a scoop of icecream to lemonade and watched it fizz up!

Lucas is a big fan of EvanTubed, so we replicated the Balloon experiment that he featured on YouTube.

It was so much fun to see the boy's faces light up as the balloon got bigger and bigger. A great science lesson that even the littlest family members can appreciate.

Of course, we also had to make something edible in the kitchen. We chose a simple recipe for Crunchy Nut Cornflake Slice out of the recipe book, as both my boys love breakfast cereal, peanut butter and chocolate. Lucas was a champ at measuring out the ingredients, and Adam enjoyed stirring everything together.

Here is a photo of the finished product- we will be sharing the full recipe on Wednesday so be sure to come back if you would like to make your own version of this slice!

We also made a New Zealand staple- Hokey Pokey. This involves heating 5 tablespoons of sugar with 2 tablespoons of golden syrup in a small pan. You then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

This puffs up and creates a golden candy.

Allow to set, and then break into pieces.

Both boys enjoyed trying the Hokey Pokey.

I put the boys in charge of choosing a recipe and making dinner on Monday night, and they chose the Cheese and Bean empanadas. Both boys did a great job mixing the ingredients and forming them into empanadas using our special cutter.

They looked great and tasted delicious- I was so proud of my boys for making these.

We had a great time using kitchen items to experiment, cook, bake and create dessert. Click below to see how other members of Poppins Book Nook were inspired!
